An admirable participant at elite level in both VFL and 1st class cricket, Max also ranked high in the public mind as an all-round bonzer bloke. I fondly remember meeting him in person when he was invited to be guest speaker at a gathering of Caricaturists' in Melbourne.
I reckon he more than justified his advance publicity. He WAS the genuine article IMO.
During 1977,I did a pen and ink caricature 'rough' of Max for a purpose long since forgotten... but it probably had something to do with the formation of 'World Series' cricket around that time. For some reason I coloured his hair on what was essentially just a black and white scribble.

Good luck old bean...
Ever since 'Senator Sam' become a figure of note because of his rather less than thoughtful antics... I've harboured a view that the man looks a lot like the TV character Mr. Bean. Maybe it was originally just the caricature bent in my make-up that spawned the visual impression... later reinforced by the disrepute attached to his apparent brain-fade in accepting a foreign donation to help defray personal expenses whilst performing his public role as an M.P.
Whatever, he seems to have been granted a period of back-bench time in which to at least take a damned good look at himself and his previous public demeanour?
